VIVA CHILE PROJECT

I'm not sure how this went under my radar, considering my love for all things food related, but I'm excited to try Barros Luco, a Chilean restaurant that opened up late last year. This is one of two in all of Manhattan, Pomaire being the other one. Seems pretty silly considering the multitude and variety of food establishments on every block of the city.

If you've never had Chilean food, here is something you should know: there will always be bread, meat, or an avocado involved. Or sometimes if you're lucky, all three will be together.

Barros Luco promises freshly baked bread, as well as traditional Chilean fast food dishes such as an empanada de pino, a meat pattie filled with beef, egg, raisin, and onion or a vienesa italiano, a frankfurter topped with tomato, avocado, and mayo. NY mag calls the chacarero a

"A terrific Chilean sandwich not unlike a Mexican torta: thinly sliced beef, mild melted cheese, avocado, tomato, mayo, chiles, and stringbeans, on a smooth and slightly sweet housemade bread that makes all the difference."

Being located in the upper 50's in the city may be a hike for some, but if this place is as good as it sounds, it may melt your taste buds.

Last night's show at the Apple Store in Soho was cool for many reasons. First, the store itself felt like heaven after scrambling around the city in 100°+ weather. Secondly, Ana Tijoux's flow was smooth like buttah. Her last song preformed last night, 1977, also the title of her new album, threw me back to Digable Planet era, but in Spanish of course.

Here's a beautiful documentary about a man's journey on a boat from Ventura, California to Patagonia to climb Mt. Corcovado. It takes him five months to reach his final destination, but along his way he he visits some of the most pristine and untouched places in the world.  I don't know about you, but scenery alone is enough to make me wonder why I'm living in such a congested metropolitan area. I'm not a soccer aficionado, but I can't help but be proud and excited with Chile's 1-0 victory over Switzerland this morning.

Despite Chile's clear domination and possession of the ball, the game was still gut wrenching and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last minute. Chile had 20 shots compared to Switzerland 7. So, if Chile can keep up their offense and complete their plays with goals, they'll have a good shot at winning this Friday against Spain, and hopefully the rest of the World Cup.
